What is Paleo?
I’m sure you could Google it if you wanted to, but my journey to Paleo started with my interest in nutrition and healthy living. Paleo for me is no longer about losing weight or staying thin. And- it’s not about certain rules that you see above either. That’s just a guideline. It’s about nourishing my body with the best real ingredients I can find.
I remember when I first heard about Paleo it ALWAYS scared me…..I knew what it was but in the back of my mind I never thought I’d be able to give up grains and dairy. Wasn’t oatmeal and Greek yogurt supposed to be good for you? Then I picked up the book It Starts with Food. This led me to attempt (and fail) a Whole 30 challenge in the winter of 2013. Even though I didn’t finish the Whole 30 then, it lead me down a path of learning the way my food was prepared, processed and how my meat was raised. I suddenly began reading and researching the perils of the industrial food processing system in this country, and became disgusted.
My husband got me Practical Paleo for my birthday in 2013, and it just spiraled from there. More and more I found myself LOVING the whole food way of life. I started researching local food options and joined a CSA in the spring. I was sold! Although I wouldn’t say that I eat 100% Paleo all of the time (who does?) I am finding that the more I nourish my body with whole foods, the better everything about my life is. Not only my body; but my mind. I don’t know it it’s a coincidence, or maybe I just am happier now in my life, but the constant anxiety and depression (that I was previously medicated for) that has plagued me most of my life is completely gone. I feel amazing inside and out. So this makes giving up the Standard American Diet so much easier. For me, it’s not restriction, it’s just a choice I’ve made to be proactive about my health.
